Broken Spoke Winery

Broken Spoke Winery is located in Earleville, Maryland and is a boutique farm, vineyard and winery. The family started with the motto "take a break. Start a conversation" and  had their grand opening June 23, 2017. Thea and Rob Hall are the owners. Rob makes the wine and food and Thea runs the tasting room, marketing and events. They have a number of events from yoga & brunch, to comedy, to their soil to soul series which will feature food pairings prepared by Rob for their wines. We attended their clever British New Year's Eve event where the ball dropped at 7pm (or midnight in London) so we  were home, comfortable and sipping on champagne by 8pm. There was wine, a band and a food truck in a large room in their barn appropriately sized for the large number of guests that attended. We even got a little too into the theme and wore cute British- inspired hats. You'll also find Broken Spoke at various festivals like Wine in the Woods and the Maryland Wine Festival, pouring wine from one of their very on-brand trailers. Over the years we have become very fond of their various vintages of vidal blancs and barberas. Recently we just did our Bottle Review Podcast on their Private Stock Bin #22. This red is a Meritage or Bordeaux-style blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. Rob shared with us that it was aged 18 months aged in new Hungarian and  American oak. We got aromas of tart red fruit, tobacco, white pepper and violet. On the palate, we tasted cranberry and cherry, with medium tannin and acidity. Next time you are in Cecil County, check out the Farm and taste some wine. They are conveniently close to Crow Vineyard and Bohemia Manor Farm, as well, so make a day of it.
