The Urban Winery
The Urban Winery is located in Silver Spring, Maryland and owned by Georgia Callis. They have a unique selection of wines that they make from locally sourced grapes, local beers, local spirits and also international wines from small producers around the world. Georgia learned how to make wine from her father, Anthony, a Greek immigrant carpenter who made his own wine. You will also notice the Greek influence in the international wines section and in the food menu, with items like dolmades and tzatziki. The wine list is extensive and you can choose from a long list of flight options, in addition to bottles and glasses. We visited the tasting room in June 2025 and sat at the bar. It was a member's pick up weekend so things were a little busy. But we ordered our flights, Best Friends and VIP Lounge, and got to tasting. Most of the wines we tasted won silvers at either the Governor's or Comptroller's Cups. Our favorites were the Silver Spring White and the cabernet franc. The Silver Spring White was made from viognier and vidal and was light and refreshing. The cabernet franc had notes of licorice, dark cherry, cocoa and vanilla along with aromas of smoke, leather and tobacco. We have been tasting Urban's wines for years at festivals. It was great finally getting down to the tasting room. We just saw them at Wine in the Woods and are pretty sure we will see them at the Maryland Wine Festival in September!
