Perigeaux Vineyards & Winery
Perigeaux Vineyards and Winery is located in St. Leonard, Maryland. As the story goes, owner Mark Flemming was reminded of the French village of Perigeaux, where he once lived and studied winemaking, when he saw the property. While discussing names, a white goose wandered up to the table, fittingly, the symbol of Perigeaux. We loved learning that this small moment became both the vineyard's name and its mascot, and we were told the white goose still makes appearances in the vineyard, almost as if keeping watch over the vines. The full story of the winery began in 1997, when the founders spent years searching the Mid-Atlantic for the perfect vineyard site before settling on the sandy loam soils and warm climate of Calvert County in Southern Maryland. Standing on the land between St. Leonard Creek and the Patuxent River, it was easy for us to understand why they chose this location. What started with the planting of 2,200 vinifera vines in 2002, has grown into four estate vineyards covering 8 acres and nearly 5,000 vines. Our initial visit to this winery was years ago while en route to one of our annual camping trips. Recently, we were able to get our hands on a few bottles of their most recently made vintages of pinot gris, 2021 and 2019. The 2021 was light and crisp with notes of melon, lemon and apricot. Acidity was medium. We did a Bottle Review Podcast on it so check it out! The 2019 was super fun since it had tertiary aromas of walnut, honey and caramel. It was a deep golden color. We also purchased one of their beautiful baguette plates that they sell. It came with a serrated knife and had big, yellow lemons on it. We hope to get down to this winery very soon and you should too.
