Orchid Cellar Meadery & Winery

Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery is located in Middletown, Maryland. It was established in 2006 and purchased by owners, Marzanna Wilk and Andrej, in 2009. They are originally from Poland and desinged a beautiful, modern, rustic cabin for their tasting room on a large property in Western Maryland. They also bring a bit of their Eastern European backgrounds into the meadery and winery, with the mead being in that style and by using Russian grapes in their white blend. To make their meads, they use honey from their own beehives and the fruit and spices used in the flavoring are locally sourced. The walls of the tasting room are always featuring local art. While we were visiting, all of the art was from the artist who also designs their labels.  The production manager, who has been with them for 4 years, helped us get some flights. Our favorite wine from the tasting was the syrah. There aren't a ton of syrahs in Maryland and there are even fewer really good ones so this was a real treat. We did our bottle review podcast on this one so check it out! It was full of fruit like blackberry and cherry with cocoa and vanilla on the finish. It was earthy and spicy with aromas of cedar, as well. The mead we chose was the grapefruit and hops. It was sparkling, semi-sweet, floral, hoppy and citrusy. 6.9% ABV made it great for easy drinking. We don't know of anywhere in Maryland that you  can get both mead and wine so this is for sure a great spot with something for everyone!
