Elk Run Vineyard & Winery

Elk Run Vineyard and Winery is located in Mount Airy, Maryland and is one of the state's original wineries. Founded in 1983 and owned by Fred and Carol Wilson, along with Neill Bassford. Boasting schist and shale soil, all wines are estate grown in their multiple vineyards. The name Elk Run was chosen for a stream and the deed name to the property is the Resurvey of Cold Friday, inspiring the name of one of their vineyard's, Cold Friday. Another one of their vineyards is named Liberty Tavern, which where there chardonnay is grown. We did a bottle review podcast on their 2020 Chardonnay so check it out. It was oaky but balanced, with 13.4% ABV, and had medium plus acidity. Notes of vanilla, butter, lemon, yellow apple and pineapple were present on the nose and palate. It was 100% free run barrel fermented and aged in barrel for 9 months. Since it was Halloween, we tried it with candy corn and it paired well! You can find Elk Run in attendance at various festivals like Wine in the Woods and Maryland Wine Festival. They have started hosting newer events like their Tent Or Treat and Holiday Pajama Party, along with putting fire pits on site in the colder months for people to visit and spent time outside, comfortably. Over the years, we have enjoyed their chardonnays, sparklings and roses. Bri has volunteered with them, pouring their wines and chatting with festival attendants at the Maryland Wine Festival. Pay this winery a visit when you get a chance. They have new golden retrievers as part of the family currently!
