Blackthorne Cellars

Blackthorne Cellars is located in Oakland, Maryland right in the Deep Creek area. It is a family owned winery that has 16 acres of contracted vines out in Washington County that are used to make their wines so they are all made from Maryland grown grapes. From  what we learned during our visit in November 2025, there are plans to build a production facility and maybe even grow their own grapes in the future. The 100 acre property they are currently using for their winery certainly has the capacity for growth. The family moved to the Deep Creek area 5 years ago after visiting and falling in love with not only Oakland, but also Virginia and Maryland wineries. Blackthorne has just recently opened to the public as their opening weekend was Labor Day 2025. The property is what I would refer to as rustic,  chic. The tasting room boasts a lot of wood finishing and accents but also chandeliers and a fireplace. The outdoor seating is a mix of tables, chairs and firepits. A stage for live music is outside, as well. The winery is designed for visitors to stay a while, relax and enjoy. There are flights well crafted to enable visitors to try all of the currently released wines. We ordered one of each, plus the mulled version of the merlot being offered. Our favorites were the  sparkling chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and the merlot. The sauvignon blanc was grassy with aromas of dill, lemon and bell pepper. The merlot was smoky with flavors of plum and  raspberry.  The mulled merlot was warm and infused with orange, anise and cinnamon. It was so perfect for the chilly, fall day. We took it over to the fire pits, sat down and relaxed after the long drive. The staff who took care of us was even formerly from the area where we grew up so of course we chatted for a bit. Small world! We couldn't encourage you more to get out to Deep Creek and stay a while at Blackthorne Cellars.
